SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) – Drivers will see repaved city streets in Selma within the next few months after an announcement of infrastructure improvements.

Mayor James Perkins Jr. said there will be a street resurfacing project covering more than 70 city blocks, beginning from Water Avenue and going north to areas impacted by the 2023 tornado.

The project will help address the city’s decadeslong infrastructure issues by alleviating flooding, enhancing public safety and improving road conditions.

“This project is critical to rebuilding Selma back to its former glory, and it is already helping to reverse decades of disinvestment,” said U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell.

Sewell’s office announced a $2.4 million grant from the Delta Regional Authority for the project in February 2024.

Additionally, another major project is underway that is funded through the Federal Lands Access Program grant in partnership with the National Park Service.

A new multilevel parking lot and improved access to the Selma Interpretive Center are in the design phase amid major expansions to the building.
