BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The South Carolina Department of Revenue has charged a Beaufort County man in connection to the evasion of over $130,000 in sales tax.

Christopher Andrew Jennings, 54, of Port Royal, is charged with four counts of tax evasion.

Department officials say Jennings operated a heavy machinery and equipment rental business, Easy Rentals Inc., starting in 2017.

Between July 2018 and June 2021, he reported and paid $37,533 in sales tax to the department, which investigation revealed to be a stark contrast to the $171,947 he actually collected during that period.

If convicted, Jennings faces a maximum of 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for each count. Additionally, he would pay for the prosecution.

Officials say Jennings was being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. A mugshot for Jennings was not immediately available.
