I’ve Dropped Google Maps in Favor of This Open-Source Alternative

Must read

Google Maps is great, but it’s not the only map tool in town. I’ve switched to Organic Maps, an open-source Google Maps alternative with every feature I need—but it also protects my privacy while I’m getting around.

Why I Chose Organic Maps Over Google Maps

Organic Maps is a free, open-source mapping app for Android and iOS, developed by the same team behind MapsWithMe, first launched in 2011. It’s built on OpenStreetMap data and works great for travelers, hikers, drivers, cyclists, and tourists. Unlike other mapping apps, Organic Maps works 100% offline—just download your maps, ditch your SIM card, and explore without mobile data. That means no worrying about data charges or losing signals in remote areas.

With Organic Maps, you can truly disconnect from the online world and rely on the app for all your navigation needs. I’m sure that’s music to the ears of adventurous souls, digital nomads, and nature lovers. I’m the kind of person who can’t sit still for a long time. I love exploring new places, taking drives, and going on solo trips. Back then, Google Maps was my go-to for finding routes, gas stations, and whatever else I needed. But then I found Organic Maps, and honestly, it changed my perspective.

Organic Maps keeps things simple—no ads, tracking, or unnecessary clutter—just navigation, plain and simple, without all the extra noise. Unlike Google Maps, which always needs my location and loves sending push notifications, Organic Maps respects my space and stays out of my way.

What I like most about Organic Maps is its commitment to privacy. It doesn’t snoop on me or sell my data. With Google Maps, even offline, you feel like it’s still watching—tracking your GPS and movements in the area you downloaded. On the other hand, Organic Maps works completely offline and gives accurate maps and directions.

And since Organic Maps works offline, it’s a total lifesaver when there’s no signal. I can always count on it to guide me through unknown terrain, even when I can’t connect to anything. It’s like having a chill travel buddy who’s always there to keep you on track.

Features and Benefits of Organic Maps

My travels always begin with a quick download of the city or area I’m traveling to—just in case I lose the signal or end up in a remote area. For this reason, I’ve chosen Organic Maps as my favorite companion app.

The first thing you’ll notice about Organic Maps is its detailed offline maps. Unlike some other apps, it even shows places you won’t find elsewhere, thanks to its collaboration with OpenStreetMap’s community-driven, open-source project that always updates its map data.

And it’s not just for city explorers. Organic Maps caters to hikers, cyclists, and adventurers as well. It has detailed routes with contour lines, elevation profiles, peaks, and slopes—basically everything you need to plan a safe and fun hike or bike trip.

It also offers turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance for walking, cycling, and driving (Android Auto). You can search for places offline, save them as bookmarks, and even import or export them into formats like KML/KMZ or GPX. If you’re using the iOS version, you can customize your bookmarks with colors and icons to keep things neat and easy to spot.

There are other thoughtful touches, too, like dark mode for night travel. Additionally, it doesn’t collect or share your data, which is a huge win if you’re serious about your privacy. So why not try it on your next adventure? It might just become your favorite travel app like it is for me.
