TOTTORI, Japan — There has been a noticeable uptick in recent months in the number of people walking along the Wakasa Kaido Shotengai shopping street in Tottori, a prefecture on the Sea of Japan. These visitors take photos of the shadow pictures displayed on the shutters of shops — an exhibition that started last summer to draw attention to the area.
The shopping street stretches 800 meters and is located between Tottori Station and the ruins of Tottori Castle. Opened in 1963, the street comprises eateries, small shops selling electronic appliances, bookstores and the local office of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who was born in the prefecture.
