The report of 2024 and the priorities for 2025 in infrastructure

The projects implemented within 2024 were significant, with the Thessaloniki Metro as a milestone, which is the most emblematic project of the last decade. At the same time, initiatives of national importance for the implementation of development infrastructure as well as the strengthening and upgrading of public transport have been launched for 2025 by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Christos Staikouras stated: “The Greek economy – despite the instability that prevails at the global level – is being upgraded, enlarged and strengthened, as public finances have improved substantially. In this collective targeting and effort, the role of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is of key importance.”
In particular, in 2024, the modernization of infrastructure and transport with the simultaneous improvement of road safety was set as an absolute priority. Thus, in the year that is leaving, the Thessaloniki Metro, one of the most emblematic projects of the last decade, the road axis Aktio – Amvrakia, an important part of the E65, from Lamia to Kalambaka, the road axis Kalloni – Sigri on Lesvos were delivered. The transfer of Attiki Odos was completed, the construction of the Bralos – Amfissa road axis began, the contract for the Ioannina – Kakavia road axis was signed.

In 2025, the extension of the Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria, the Patra – Pyrgos highway as well as the Vonitsa – Lefkada road will be completed.

In addition, in the context of dealing with the consequences of the climate crisis, the Ministry of Infrastructure proceeded with the implementation of large irrigation and anti-flooding projects and the improvement of water supply and drainage infrastructure throughout the territory, while in 2025, corresponding projects will be completed.
Regarding transport, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is implementing the reform of the Greek railway.

An important set of policies are also implemented to strengthen electric mobility, as in the last 2 years, it has been subsidized with the amount of 60 million. euros the purchase of 20,000 electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, an important priority is the upgrading of the public transport fleet with the aim of reducing the energy footprint, improving the quality of services provided to citizens, and accessibility for people with disabilities.

Already, 270 new buses with anti-pollution technology are in circulation in Athens, with the aim of 400 by the end of 2024, and 950 in the summer of 2025.

According to Staikouras: “We “run” these initiatives at a constantly improving rate, with efficiency and quality. Thus, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport contributes to the effort to upgrade the quality of life of all citizens, the expansion of the production base and the continuous and all-round strengthening of our country”.
