UPPER MICHIGAN, Mich. (WLUC) – Christmas Eve is the last day to get holiday shopping done, making it a busy day for many small U.P. businesses.

Local businesses said Tuesday was just as busy, if not busier, than the weeks leading up to the holidays.

At Touch of Finland in Marquette Township, Store Clerk Marleigh McKinnon said people have been happy and excited for the holidays while coming in to buy last minute gifts.

“Well, we’re selling a lot of jewelry, a lot of candy, and a lot of socks, mostly stocking stuffer stuff,” said McKinnon

In Marquette, Downwind Sports Co-Owner Bill Thompson said they saw people pick up items they’ve been trying to hide from family members.

“The great thing is, compared to last year, we have snow and cold,” said Thompson. “And so, a lot of those items that are winter toys that we specialize in, cross-country skis, downhill skis, snowshoes, we see a lot of people picking them up because what a great opportunity to go out, unwrap that under the tree and then go out and play with that the next day.”

Downwind Sports also offers snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals for those looking to have a fun winter experience with family.

In Ishpeming, White Bear Maple Products and Gifts Co-Owner Robert Bess said they saw people come in early on Tuesday to pick up gifts just in time.

“People coming in early, looking for last minute gifts, stocking stuffers,” said Bess. “We have all kinds of jams, we have Pam’s Pantry, we have different bar soaps, and they’ve been a pretty big hit this year.”

Regardless of when people did their shopping, these businesses are grateful to those who shopped local this holiday season.
