Jets QB Aaron Rodgers comments on future, being ‘released by a teenager’

The 2024 New York Jets are like a bad movie or a train wreck, whatever you prefer.

As if finding new ways to lose every week wasn’t enough, the Jets are littered with an overmatched coaching staff, a growing playoff drought that’s the longest in American sports and are, reportedly, using video games to make roster decisions while taking advice from teenagers and social media.

On Monday, Aaron Rodgers poured more gasoline on the fire, speculating he could be released after the season. While the experiment has been a colossal failure, it would still be surprising to see “Gang Green” rip the band-aid off and bid farewell to the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

“Being released would be a first; being released by a teenager, that would also be a first,” Rodgers said jokingly on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Rodgers’ comments are in reference to a report from The Athletic last week, which discussed the influence Woody Johnson’s teenage sons, Brick and Jack, have on the organization. The story also reported that Johnson nixed a trade that would’ve sent Jerry Jeudy to New York because of his rating on the Madden video game.

“So, hey, I’m open to everything and I find the comedy in all of it,” Rodgers said. “If that happens, hey, it’s a great story.”

Whether or not it’s a great story depends on your perspective, but the Jets continue to find themselves in the headlines for the most bizarre reasons each week.

The Jets new regime will ultimately determine Rodgers’ fate, as the team is set to hire a new coach and general manager this offseason. The belief is that Johnson is ready to move on, however, according to ESPN.

“I think there’s a world where they just say, ‘Hey, thank you, we’re going to go in another direction’ on January 6th,” Rodgers said. “That’s a possibility. I think there’s also a possibility we’re going to wait and see who the new staff is.”

The quarterback suggested he’d be open to a pay cut, saying he’s made a lot of money over the years. Rodgers added that he hasn’t decided if he wants to play.

ESPN reported that Johnson’s sons are very much involved in the organization, something the Jets have denied.

Since joining the team via trade in the 2023 offseason, Rodgers has continuously taken issue with the leaks and circus-like drama surrounding the organization.

In terms of bad movies, the Jets are firmly in “Sharknado” territory. If spoof comedies that have an obvious relevance to this aviation-inspired franchise are your thing, the Jets are run like characters from “Airplane!”

The traditional circus might no longer exist in New York and New Jersey. Luckily for them, the Jets are still in town.
