Japan Airlines (JAL) and JAL Engineering have been honored with the “IT Award (Open Innovation Area)” at the 42nd IT Award ceremony organized by the Japan Institute of Information Technology. This marks the third time they have received this prestigious award, following their previous win last year. The accolade recognizes their work on the theme “Maintenance DX in pursuit of ‘Zero Zero 100’ in aircraft maintenance.”
Evaluation Comments
JAL Engineering Co., Ltd. has been pioneering digital transformation (DX) in aircraft maintenance, an inherently complex and failure-critical field, under the guiding “Zero Zero 100” philosophy. This initiative aims to preemptively identify and prevent aircraft failures before they occur. The award committee praised this effort as an exemplary model of applying cutting-edge technologies in collaboration with various partners, advancing DX in the aviation industry, and ultimately contributing to the success of the IT Award.
Key Initiatives Leading to the Award
- Failure Prediction Algorithm Development
JAL Engineering has enhanced the accuracy of early aircraft failure detection by employing advanced failure prediction algorithms, leveraging big data and AI technologies for reliable predictive maintenance. - Engine Internal Condition Diagnostic Support Tools
Using medical-grade AI for image recognition in engine endoscopy, JAL Engineering has improved the precision of internal engine inspections, enabling the early identification of potential defects before they manifest. - Optimization of Line Maintenance Planning with Quantum Computing
JAL has developed an application that uses quantum computing technology to optimize line maintenance scheduling. This tool automates the planning process, which traditionally required highly experienced personnel to manage the complex variables such as aircraft usage and mechanic availability.
The IT Award, established by the IT Association in March 1983, honors companies, municipalities, institutions, and other organizations in Japan that have achieved significant advancements in “management innovation through IT.” The award recognizes those who have demonstrated exceptional success in implementing information technology to drive innovation and improve operations across industries.
