JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Hinkley Bakery is closed until further notice, and a new coffee shop is taking over a space in downtown Jackson.

Floral business closes its downtown Jackson store

A Jackson floral business is closing its downtown store, but it’s not going away any time soon.

The Front Porch JXN opened a downtown storefront at 220 S. Mechanic St. in summer 2023. However, after owner Kendra Dolson said she received citations from the city to redo renovations to their home, she decided to close the brick-and-mortar store and use the savings on their fixer-upper.

Dolson said she will move the floral business back to her home, and she’s redoing the website to be more suited for online ordering.

Say goodbye to Missy’s Little Grass Shack and hello to a new owner in Grass Lake

After being a home to Grass Lake locals for years, Missy’s Little Grass Shack is closing its doors to allow a new owner to take over.

Owner Missy Shelhart announced she has sold the bar after operating it for nearly 25 years. She said she now hopes to focus on her other restaurant, Sawd’s Village Inn, 12000 E. Michigan Ave. in Grass Lake.

Shelhart said she sold the bar to Justin Klavon, owner of Klavon’s Pizzeria & Pub. While Klavon declined to comment about his plans, Shelhart said he is a successful businessman, and she believes he will do a great job.

Grab a quick cup of joe, or stay to work at Callaghan’s Coffee Cafe in Brooklyn

Find fresh coffee, quick eats and a comfortable place to meet a friend at Callaghan’s Coffee Cafe in Brooklyn.

Chad and Desiree Fires opened the coffee shop in downtown Brooklyn in August 2020 after seeing the lack of places for people to meet up and grab some coffee, Desiree said. The coffee shop serves breakfast and lunch, as well as having a large coffee menu.

The coffee shop sells a variety of lattes, hot chocolate, smoothies, teas and cappuccinos. Callaghan’s offers more than 40 flavors of syrup, allowing customers to customize their drinks, the Fires said.

Barbecue food truck is opening permanent spot in Brooklyn

After roaming around the state in a food truck for several years, PB&J’s BBQ will open a permanent kitchen inside of Callaghan’s Coffee Cafe in Brooklyn.

PB&J’s owner Bert McLain and Callaghan’s owners Chad and Desiree Fires became friends after meeting at food truck events, the Fireses said. McLain expressed interest in opening a brick-and-mortar store, so they offered their coffee shop, 109 S. Main St.

Chad and Desiree Fires are currently finalizing the kitchen, which is being built inside of a former storage space in the cafe, for McClain. McLain hopes to be open by the end of the year, he said, adding this will benefit the Fireses and him.

Fortress Cafe is closing downtown store, but new coffee shop will take its place

Fortress Cafe has shut down its downtown location, but another coffee shop will soon take its place.

In October, the coffee shop announced on social media it will close its cafe inside Lean Rocket Lab, 133 W. Michigan Ave. This change will allow Fortress Cafe, open there since 2018, to focus on its farm, online store and other locations at 1300 W. Michigan Ave. and Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, 205 N. East Ave.

Lean Rocket Lab will open a new coffee shop in its place called Cafe Fuel. Just like before, the shop will brew Fortress Coffee and serve bagels and bread from Doughnation Bakery in Jackson.

Hinkley Bakery in Jackson closes until further notice

The famous Hinkley Bakery in Jackson has closed its doors until further notice.

The doughnut shop announced, without explanation, the closure in a social media post Wednesday, Dec. 4. This comes after Hinkley Bakery, 700 S. Blackstone St., announced it would not be open through the Thanksgiving weekend, according to its Facebook page.

Owners Brian and Connie Hinkley could not be reached for comment. However, a sign posted on the door Wednesday said the bakery was “still making improvements to serve you better,” and it will be closed with “updates to follow.”

Restore The Star: Efforts are underway to revive the former jewel of Brooklyn

It’s been years since the marquee on the Star Theatre in Brooklyn has shined, but some flickering lights are signaling hope for Brooklyn residents.

The Star Theatre, 119 N. Main St., was known as the “jewel of Brooklyn,” where many saw movies with families, friends and dates. It opened in 1937 and grew in popularity in the 1950′s, but it ultimately shut down in 1986.

While many attempts to revive the beloved theater have failed in the past, another group is putting their hats in the ring. Members of the nonprofit Irish Hills Sports and Recreation are planning to bring the vacated theater back to put on movies, shows and live entertainment
