CHARLOTTE, N.C. — No. 8 SMU and No. 17 Clemson are set to face off Saturday evening inside Bank of America Stadium with ACC glory — and so much more — on the line. The Mustangs have had a magical first year in the ACC, reaching an 11-1 record and finishing the season undefeated in conference play. Even so, questions about their legitimacy as a College Football Playoff team without an ACC title to their name linger.
After losing at least three regular-season games for a second consecutive year under Dabo Swinney, Clemson needs a win in the ACC Championship Game to make the playoff cut. The Tigers haven’t been to the CFP since 2020, and they haven’t won an ACC title since 2022 after taking home the conference’s top honor each year between 2015-20.
