Google Wallet Can Now Replace Your Passport At Many Airports

Must read

Google Wallet now lets U.S. travelers create a digital ID with their passport for TSA checkpoints, speeding up airport security.

A new digital identification feature by Google now provides a way to make the airport experience for travellers in the U.S. efficient. The new Google Wallet allows users to create a digital ID pass carrying their U.S. passport, which works just like a normal ID at select TSA checkpoints, making the wait for security lines slightly shorter. However, a clarification from Google spokesperson Liz Schulten regarding this digital ID is that it will not serve as a substitute for a passport and cannot be used for immigration or border control purposes. As of now, the travellers are recommended to carry their physical IDs as a backup.

How to Set Up Your Digital ID

Setting up a Digital ID is a pretty simple process. You just need to open the Google Wallet app and opt to create an ID pass using your U.S. Passport. You will have to scan the chip embedded in your passport and take a selfie video for identity verification. After that, you will be informed through a notification by the app once your Digital ID is set up, usually in a few minutes.

Where and When Can You Use It?

The digital ID feature is gradually introduced to a few eligible users and is expected to be available broadly in the coming weeks. TSA mentions the list of participating airports on its website which accepts this feature. Most importantly, this feature is still in an early stage of development and is not a complete substitute for physical IDs.

Expanded Support For State IDs

New Mexico residents can now add their state driver’s licenses or IDs to Google Wallet, and New Mexico is now the sixth state to support the feature, behind others that are embracing this digital convenience.

As this technology develops, it promises to offer more flexibility for frequent flyers. However, for now, carrying your physical documents remains a must.
