Local firefighters partnered with Fleet Farm for the third annual Shop With A Hero event on Dec. 5, offering some holiday cheer to families in need.

The program, a collaboration between Fleet Farm, the Stevens Point Fire Department, and the Stevens Point Firefighters Charitable Foundation, assisted two families with a total of six children this year, according to Lt. Shane Westphal.

The families, recommended by Portage County Health and Human Services, also chose gifts for their parents and/or guardians.

Funding for the initiative came from a $500 donation from Fleet Farm, $500 from the Stevens Point Firefighters Charitable Foundation, and an additional $500 in community contributions.

“It’s really a good cause, and as you can see, it’s bringing a smile to the faces of the kids and the department members we have here tonight,” Westphal said. “So that’s always a good thing.”

Sixteen firefighters, both on- and off-duty, participated in the event, helping the children select gifts and creating a memorable holiday experience, he said.

Westphal said Local 484 accepts donations for the program year-round. Those interested in supporting Shop With A Hero or other charitable initiatives can email [email protected] or visit stevenspointfirefighters.org.
