The final tenant in Homewood’s Brookwood Village has closed permanently.
The sign could be seen posted on the doors of the business Thursday morning.
The decline of the shopping center has been an ongoing process for several years now.
“I do recall when I moved here from ohio that this was a thriving mall…it was very disappointing when it closed,” said Hank Stickley, a local resident.
Brookwood Village opened in 1973.
A shopping destination once booming.
City leaders have cited Covid for escalating the decline.
Some community members also unsure if the area can support this shopping center along with the summit.
“I think that it’s possible but it’s gonna take some sharp minds to get it going if they decide to give it a shot,” said another local resident, Carl Sanfelippo.
However, the most recent step forward for Brookwood Village came one month ago.
Homewood’s planning commission approved a proposal asking that the fourteen acre property be re-surveyed so it can be subdivided into three separate lots.
The commission also voted to approve development plan amendments to permit renovation and conversion of the former Belk department store into a medical office building for Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center.
Previous plans for townhomes and apartments at the site were shot down.
We saw someone with the site developers assessing the property Thursday morning. They told us Fairway Investments has no comment at this time.
