DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – The season of giving can also be known as the season of shopping as everyone is looking to give out the best present and for many this year instead of searching the web, they are back in stores.
“The mall’s buzzing. Every time this time of year; Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, people really turn out and show support for our small businesses here so it’s been great,” said Alex Kulstead the general manager of Duluth Kitchen Co. in Fitger’s Mall.
Kulstead believes people are making their way back to the small local stores because they understand how important they are.
“This time of year they want to support local business. They want to get out in the community and support the businesses that make this community special.”
One of those hot spots is the Fitger’s mall which is packed full of great gifts according to the Kintop sisters who came over the bridge from Wisconsin.
“We’re a pretty big outdoors family so it hits all the boxes with it,” said Sophie Kintop before her sister Chloe added. “Also, I feel like there’s a lot of good small businesses to support in Fitgers as well.”
The Kintops added that during the Covid pandemic, it was difficult to get out for shopping but are glad to see the return.
Meanwhile, some shoppers are returning to the stores because of the people who put the gifts on the shelves according to John Keefover with Trailfitters.
“They can get whatever they want online but we provide customer service trying to help them find exactly what it is they’re looking for or alternatives for it,” said Keefover. “They really appreciate it and we really appreciate their business.”
But, even if shoppers elect to use their own judgment, it’s still helpful to have the product on hand.
“I think it’s nice to touch and see things. I think we get used to ordering all the time,” said Caitlin Siems. “Amazon shows up when we need it, but I think it’s nice to be out and about and see what’s out there.”
