Google Photos removing ‘Memories’ from bottom bar, now called ‘Moments’

Must read

Google Photos is rolling out a redesign that removes the “Memories” tab from the bottom bar, though the functionality remains intact with a new “Moments” name and location. This is starting to roll out on iOS.

Google introduced the “scrapbook-like” Memories tab in August of 2023 to auto-organize your pictures. This functionality is now being renamed to “Moments” and moved into the Collections tab alongside People & pets, Albums, Documents, and Places. Compared to the other tiles, this one cycles through recent images.

“The Memories view has moved to Collections”

“Memories is now Moments”

There are no other changes to the AI-powered feed: “Your photos, organized into your best moments. Add details, search and share with others.”

With this change, the “Memories” branding solely refers to the carousel at the top of your main photos grid.

This also results in a three-tab bottom bar with Photos, Collections, and Search (or the Gemini-powered “Ask”). Google Photos navigation looks much cleaner, with Google Maps going the same route earlier this year.

We’re seeing the Memories to Moments rename after a server-side update with version 7.9 of Google Photos for iOS. The Android rollout should be coming soon. This follows the recent redesign of “Sharing” to “Updates.”
