Five Madison public schools are among the top in Wisconsin, according to annual U.S. News & World Report rankings.
Shorewood Hills, Van Hise and Randall elementary schools all scored in the top 30 for their grade level, as did Hamilton Middle School and West High School.
Additionally, Marquette and Stephens elementary schools and Spring Harbor Middle School ranked in the top 10% statewide in their grade levels.
“These recognitions directly reflect our focus on students and commitment to helping them achieve their potential,” Madison School District Superintendent Joe Gothard said in a statement. “The hard work of students and staff across the district helps ensure that learners at all of our schools are best positioned for success in whatever they choose to pursue.”

Six other Dane County schools also scored in Wisconsin’s top 30 in their grade levels: Verona Area International School, Elm Lawn Elementary School in the Middleton-Cross Plains School District, Waunakee Intermediate School, Kromrey Middle School in Middleton-Cross Plains, Middleton High School and Waunakee High School.
For elementary and middle schools, rankings are determined using math and literacy proficiency rates and adjusted to account for student demographics and income levels. High schools also are scored using state assessment data, in addition to graduation rates and college readiness data, such as the number of students who earn college credit or take an Advanced Placement exam.
