New book chronicles most memorable US Opens

Must read

A new book chronicling 20 of the most memorable editions of the US Open has been published by Tatra Press.

Written by award-winning golf writer David Barrett, The Greatest US Opens: High Drama at Golf’s Most Challenging Championship brings readers inside the ropes at the most dramatic tournaments since the Open’s inception in 1895.

Renowned as the most challenging of the major championships, the US Open has showcased America’s greatest courses, including Pebble Beach, Oakmont, Merion and Shinnecock Hills.

And, by adding the notoriously long rough and super-fast greens, the US Open is considered the toughest challenge of the year, providing a platform for the greats of the game to test their mettle and prove their stature by winning multiple times – including Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.

The extreme difficulty of a US Open course has also yielded the occasional and unlikely upset, including Francis Oiumet’s 1913 thrilling victory over English greats Harry Vardon and Ted Ray or Jack Fleck stealing a surprise win from Hogan in 1955 – both of which are recounted in the book.

The new generation of stars are also included, with Jon Rahm’s victory at Torrey Pines in 2021 also covered in this comprehensive and fascinating retelling of the players, performances and places that have formed a part of US Open history.

The Greatest US Opens, published by Tatra Press, is on sale now. RRP £27.95.
