Google CEO Sundar Pichai says AI generates more than 25% codes at the company: ‘This helps our engineers do….’ – Times of India

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that more than a quarter of new code created at the company is generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking during the company’s Q3 earnings call, Pichai said that using AI for coding was “boosting productivity and efficiency” within Google before adding that after the code is generated, it is then checked and reviewed by employees. He stated “This helps our engineers do more and move faster… I am energised by our progress, and the opportunities ahead. And we continue to be laser focused on building great products.”
For the third quarter, Google-parent Alphabet registered a 15% year-on-year (YoY) jump in its revenues to $88.3 billion, driven by a strong performance by its cloud unit that grew by 35% YoY to $11.4 billion. Revenues from Google Services, which includes its flagship search engine business, increased 13% to $76.5 billion.
“We are uniquely positioned to lead in the era of AI because of our differentiated full stack approach to AI innovation, and we’re now seeing this operate at scale,” Pichai said.

Google simplifies its organisational structure

During the Q3 earnings call, Pichai said that Google has made multiple changes that have unified teams in research, machine learning infrastructure and developer teams. “This is all helping us move faster. For instance, it was a small, dedicated team that built Notebook LM, an incredibly popular product that has so much promise,” he said.
Google, in the past few years has been streamlining its organisation structure to boost efficiency, optimise costs, and enhance speed and agility in its operations. In 2023, the company merged its AI research units, DeepMind and Google Brain under one division – Google DeepMind. The tech giant has also introduced the Gemini family of AI models to fuel the next generation of AI advancement.

Internal AI model named Goose

Google reportedly has an internal AI model called “Goose”. According to Business Insider, the tool is used by Google employees to code and build products. The publication claims to have seen internal documents which say that Goose was trained on “25 years of engineering expertise at Google,”.
