Google launched the Pixel 9 family in August this year, getting the jump on many of its competitors to be one of the first Android smartphones to launch in the run-up to the holiday quarter. At the same time, the price of the existing range of handsets dropped. Those looking for more value for money have a new option today.
Google has opened up a refurbished section of its US store, offering older Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 family of devices, with discounts of up to forty percent.
These Pixel handsets are certified refurbished units, which have been put through several tests and parts replaced as required:
“We carefully inspect the battery, housing, and screens for any imperfections. If any phones need work, our technicians only use authentic Google parts for the repairs. Each phone gets the latest Android software before being packaged in a new box, and comes with a compatible charger. The result is a Pixel phone that’s as close to new as possible.”
It’s also worth noting that Google offers the same warranty and customer support as you would get on a brand-new Pixel.
Neither is this a brand-new approach. For many years, Apple has tucked away its premium iPhones in its own refurbished section of the Apple Store, with discounts on the order of fifteen to twenty percent, also offering the same warranty, support and allowing consumers to buy the AppleCare extended warranty.
The current prices are:
- Pixel 6: $339 down from $599.
- Pixel 6 Pro: $539 down from $899.
- Pixel 6A: $249 down from $449.
- Pixel 7: $429 down from $599.
- Pixel 7 Pro: $629 down from $899.
There is a note of caution. Unlike Apple’s refurbished store, Google is not automatically replacing the battery in the Pixels. Google spokesperson Patrick Seybold spoke to The Verge as they highlighted the battery issue:
Google says the phones “undergo meticulous inspection,” but Seybold stopped short of guaranteeing any specifics about battery health when we asked. Both Samsung and Apple replace the batteries for their refurbished phones, while Google’s blog post says “If any phones need work, our technicians only use authentic Google parts for the repairs. Each phone gets the latest Android software before being packaged in a new box, and comes with a compatible charger.”
Stock levels will not be as predictable as buying a new device, so if you see an offer that you do want, then you should consider a speedy purchase as it may not be available. You can browse the stock and buy your refurbished Pixels here.
