MARQUETTE — For the past couple of months, staff at The Mining Journal have been working diligently to bring you a hard-cover book stuffed to the brim with local history.
The book, titled “Call of the North: A Historic Journey through Upper Michigan’s Marquette County,” is a limited edition 144-page pictorial history detailing the people, events and places that have influenced Marquette and its surrounding area.
As a community newspaper, The Mining Journal has been involved in the lives of residents with birth announcements, honor roll, graduate listings, dean’s lists, accomplishments and even to the day they leave the world and we share their obituaries.
No doubt there will be a person or two you recognize or that you’re related to. There are even some things you may not have even heard of before.
Did you know that at least two times in Marquette’s history schooners have been frozen in place in the harbor until June or July? Or that there is a veteran of the War of 1812 buried in our city?
What do President Teddy Roosevelt, the Detroit Red Wings and the Green Bay Packers have in common? They’ve all visited Marquette County!
All information and photos were sourced from the Marquette Regional History Center’s column “Superiorland History” section in The Mining Journal. Without the MRHC, this book wouldn’t have been possible.
The book retails for $39.95 and is available in The Mining Journal office at 249 W. Washington St. To ship anywhere in the continental United States, an additional flat fee of $6 will be added. International shipping prices are dependent upon the destination.
“Call of the North” is available in limited quantities and additional copies will not be printed. Now is the perfect time to grab a copy of this one-of-a-kind book compiled by your local newspaper and keep it for yourself or gift it to a loved one for the upcoming holiday season.
Research and organization were performed by Alexandria Bournonville, who also wrote all content based on previous MRHC articles. David Bond completed all book layouts. Publisher Ann Troutman oversaw the project and the book was edited by Troutman, managing editor Bud Sargent and sports editor Steve Brownlee.
