BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A landmark piece of legislation designed to enhance infrastructure funding for Alabama’s inland waterways and strengthen the state’s supply chain has passed.
Senate Bill 60, according to the Birmingham Jefferson County Port Authority (BJCPA), represents a significant advancement in the ongoing efforts to boost economic development and infrastructure in the region.
The bill will allocate critical funding through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), which will distribute the funds through a grant over the next three years.
This initiative builds on the success of the Inland Port Infrastructure Grant, originally created in 2019 with $5 million to support infrastructure projects across Alabama. The previous funding will have a substantial economic impact, with estimated total benefits of around $18 million.
The passage of this bill is a testament to the efforts of the State Legislature and Governor Ivey’s commitment to improving infrastructure and strengthening Alabama’s supply chain.
“This is a tremendous win for Birmingham and for Alabama’s inland waterways,” said David Russell Jr., Director of Business Retention and Expansion at the Birmingham Business Alliance. “Senate Bill 60 will provide essential resources to strengthen our infrastructure, fostering economic growth and creating jobs throughout the region.”
The Birmingham Jefferson County Port Authority is equally enthusiastic about the bill’s implications. “We are grateful to Representatives Chip Brown and Senator Arthur Orr for their unwavering support,” said Mahari McTier, Chairman at the Birmingham Jefferson Port Authority. “This funding will significantly enhance our ability to develop critical infrastructure and support regional economic development.”
