Google has once again slashed the price of its Pixel 8 Pro as it clears the remaining stock. The discount doesn’t quite match up to Amazon’s Prime Day deals, but newly enhanced trade-in prices shouldn’t be ignored.
U.K. buyers can pick up the Pixel 8 Pro for £150 ($195.77) less directly from the Google Store, bringing the price down to £749 ($977.55) from £899 ($1173.32). Curiously the base Pixel 8 handset, nor the Pixel 8a, is on sale and it looks like the Pixel 7 is now completely sold out. Google still had Pixel 7 handsets for sale up until the first week of September.
The real surprise in this promotion is how generous Google’s trade-in prices are. Typically the company has lagged behind Samsung (and Apple in some cases) when it comes to valuations for your old phone.
But the latest prices are absolutely worth your attention. Here are a few that caught my eye.
- Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max – £488 ($636.91)
- Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max – £419 ($546.85)
- Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – £546 ($712.60)
- Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra – £465 ($606.89)
The bad news is that Google doesn’t value your old Pixel very much. It will only pay £316 ($412.42) for the Pixel 6 Pro, which was released in 2021. Compared to the iPhone 11 Pro, which launched in 2019, it shows that Apple and Samsung’s tech holds more value. With that said, you likely won’t get much more than £316 on the secondary market for the Pixel 6 Pro.
This is something to keep in mind if you’re a frequent phone upgrader and you’re buying Google tech: Pixel phones will dramatically drop in value soon after they’re launched. If you plan to hold the Pixel 8 for the full seven years of its life cycle then the second-hand value isn’t a concern.
Is last year’s Pixel worth buying? Yes, is the simple answer. Read my detailed story on why that is here. But, in essence, there is very little difference between the Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 in terms of ability. Both also have a promised seven years of security and Android updates, which guarantees the device will be futureproofed for the best part of a decade.
Update October 11th: Google U.K. has launched a new promotion for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. It isn’t a straight money off discount (we’ll have to wait for that), but the company is giving away a free pair of Pixel Buds Pro 2 worth £219 ($286.24) with every purchase of the Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
This comes with enhanced trade-in prices for your old device up to £750 ($980.26). Google actually advertises the top amount as £550 ($718.86) for the Pixel 8 Pro, but it will pay iPhone 15 Pro Max owners £750 for their handset.
Obviously neither device is worth trading in, but there are some good prices here for old tech such as £593 ($775.06) for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, and £563 ($735.85) for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
