For the first time this fall, a No. 1 team lost its top spot in the New York State Sportswriters Association’s weekly football rankings.
Section IV Tioga, the three-time defending Class D champion, was knocked from its perch this week after losing its second game of the season, 41-34 at home to Delaware Academy on Friday night. The defeat dropped the Tigers all the way to No. 15 in Class D.
Section II Warrensburg/Lake George/Bolton was the beneficiary of Tioga’s loss, moving up from No. 3 to the top spot.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama remained No. 2 in Class D after its 36-28 loss to nonleague Lackawanna on Saturday afternoon in Panama. The Wolfpack will take on another Class B program in nonleague action this coming Saturday, hosting Lake Shore in Sherman.
Salamanca remained No. 2 in Class C after its 44-16 win over Silver Creek/Forestville. The Warriors will travel to Falconer to take on Class C honorable-mention Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove on Friday night. The Herd shut out Fredonia 21-0 last Friday night at the Orange Bowl in Fredonia.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton moved up two spots in Class C to No. 16 after beating Class C honorable-mention Eden/North Collins 49-6 last Friday night in Mayville. The Eagles will visit Class C honorable-mention Southwestern this Friday night at Charles A. Lawson Field. The Trojans are coming off a 24-14 loss to Portville/Cuba-Rushford, another honorable-mention choice in Class C.
Randolph moved up to No. 11 in Class D after dropping Franklinville/Ellicottville to an honorable-mention choice with a 54-17 beatdown last Friday in Ellicottville. The Cardinals host Wilson this week at Raymond Van Wie Field, while the Titans will host fellow Class D honorable mention Gowanda/Pine Valley in Franklinville. Gowanda/Pine Valley beat Cardinal O’Hara 51-0 last week.
Jamestown fell to honorable mention in Class AA after a 41-40 loss to fellow honorable mention Orchard Park last Friday at Strider Field. The Red & Green will travel to Class AA No. 27 Lancaster this week.
In 8-man football, Frewsburg moved up a spot to No. 6 after beating No. 10 Holley 42-28 last Thursday. The Bears will have their biggest test of the season Friday night when they travel to No. 1 Pembroke.
Cardinal Hayes of New York City’s Catholic High Schools League remains No. 1 in Class AA. Bennett is No. 7, Canisius is No. 13 and St. Francis is No. 26, while Niagara Falls and St. Joe’s Collegiate are listed as honorable mention.
Section VIII Garden City and Section I Somers remain tied at No. 1 in Class A. Clarence is No. 11, Sweet Home is No. 19 and Starpoint is No. 25. Kenmore West, McKinley, West Seneca West, Williamsville East and Williamsville North are all listed as honorable mention.
In Class B, Section IV Maine-Endwell is still No. 1. Pioneer is No. 6, Lackawanna is No. 9, Health Sciences/Buffalo Academy of Science/Global Concepts is No. 19 and South Park is No. 25. Depew, Grand Island, Iroquois, Maryvale, St. Mary’s and Springville are all listed as honorable mention.
Section IV Waverly is No. 1 in Class C. Alden is No. 17 and Newfane is No. 18, while Medina is listed as honorable mention.
GIRLS SOCCER
Frewsburg remains No. 5 in the Class C rankings after beating Silver Creek/Forestville and Westfield/Brocton last week. Tuesday’s win over North Collins was the Bears’ only game this week.
Ellicottville is No. 9 in Class D after a win over Pine Valley/Gowanda last week. The Eagles have already beaten Olean and Salamanca this week, and travel to Franklinville tonight.
Section XI Ward Melville is No. 1 in Class AAA, while Lancaster is No. 20.
In Class AA, Section I Albertus Magnus is No. 1, Clarence is No. 8, Lockport is No. 12 and Niagara Wheatfield is No. 18.
Section I Rye is No. 1 in Class A, while Lewiston-Porter is No. 8 and Williamsville South is No. 17.
Section III Marcellus is No. 1 in Class B, Allegany-Limestone is No. 4 and Royalton-Hartland is No. 20.
Section II Stillwater is No. 1 in Class C, St. Mary’s of Lancaster is No. 2 and Portville is No. 14.
Section V Fillmore is No. 1 in Class D.
BOYS SOCCER
Southwestern moved up three spots to No. 16 in the Class B rankings after wins over Dunkirk, Olean and Randolph last week. The Trojans also beat Fredonia and Jamestown to open this week.
Randolph dropped 11 spots to No. 14 in Class C with a win over Cassadaga Valley/Falconer, followed by losses to Ellicottville and Southwestern last week. The Cardinals topped Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley and Pine Valley/Gowanda to open this week.
Ellicottville moved up two spots to No. 13 in Class D with wins over Pine Valley/Gowanda and Randolph last week. The Eagles tied Cassadaga Valley/Falconer and lost to Portville to open this week, and will host Olean on Friday.
Section XI Brentwood is No. 1 in Class AAA and Lancaster is No. 3.
In Class AA, Section XI Smithtown West is No. 1.
Section V Brockport is No. 1 in Class A, Grand Island is No. 3, Williamsville East is No. 4 and Lewiston-Porter is No. 19.
Section II Mechanicville is No. 1 in Class B, East Aurora is No. 5 and Lafayette is No. 11.
Section IX Rhinebeck is No. 1 in Class C, Wilson is No. 6 and Allegany-Limestone is No. 12.
Section III Sackets Harbor is No. 1 in Class D.
