BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Binghamton has received $5 million to improve the Henry Street connective corridor.
The funding is part of Representative Marc Molinaro’s appropriation bills to provide federal money for community development projects in the state’s 19th Congressional District.
The project will include a complete reconstruction of the streetscape, narrowing travel lanes to eliminate slip lanes and putting up more lighting along the street to improve safety on the street. It also includes new pedestrian crossings.
Henry Street has suffered from issues with its storm management systems and wastewater systems that caused flooding. The funding addresses this issue as well.
Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham said the city must rebuild Henry Street.
“It is a major project and this $5 million allocation is absolutely critical to getting it done,” Kraham remarked.
The project is set to begin next year and the Kraham projects that it will take one or two construction seasons to be completed. Currently, the project is still in the planning and design stages,
It’s estimated to cost around $9 million to complete.
