Shopping at markets and pop-ups that sell fun, unique items is a great way to while away a weekend in Hong Kong.
For retro clothes and jewellery, head to Western Market in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island. If you are looking for handmade arts and crafts or a preloved book, then Sai Kung is the place to be.
1. Soho Market’s Summer Fantasy Handicraft Market
If rummaging around thrift shops is your thing, then this bazaar – set in a historic building in Mong Kok that dates back to the 1920s – is a must-visit this weekend. On July 28 and 29 from midday to 8pm, the market will feature second-hand clothes, nostalgic jewellery, retro toys and other goods.

2. Kuromi at Planet Yoho
Fans of Kuromi, a popular character from Sanrio’s My Melody universe, cannot miss this event – running until September 1 – at Yoho Mall in Yuen Long in the New Territories. From 10am-10pm, you can take photos at Instagrammable hotspots – a giant spaceship is most definitely the highlight – and take home a souvenir from a pop-up store selling more than 400 Kuromi-themed items.

3. Africa Store pop-up
The Africa Store has been importing high-quality handmade jewellery, housewares and skincare products from the continent since opening in 2019.
Pick up a unique product at its pop-up at the Airside shopping centre in Kai Tak in Kowloon from July 26-28, with highlights including handmade glass-bead earrings and glass bead clutches.

4. Nianhua Department Store
Take a trip down memory lane with this pop-up vintage treasure trove at Western Market in Sheung Wan.
There are retro Hong Kong-designed goodies galore here, including jewellery from vintage brands Nam Yang Kee and Xiao Shi Guang, and interesting drinks from local label Magnolia Lab, whose premium liqueur uses Chinese botanicals. The pop-up will be there until September 1.

5. Sai Kung Waterfront Market
Strolling along Sai Kung’s promenade – restaurants on one side, sampans on the other – is a great way to spend a relaxing few hours. From now until September 29, day- trippers can also enjoy a market featuring handmade arts and crafts, second-hand books and eco-friendly products. There are also free workshops and fun activities for children.
The market is open from 11am-6pm on weekends and public holidays.
