Various local organizations have unveiled a $48 million investment that will go toward several infrastructure projects across Houston and Katy.
The Call 4 Projects: Places 4 People initiative will fund 20 projects this year. Funding will go toward feasibility studies, road improvements and traffic signal installations or modifications among other things. The initiative is a collaboration between the Houston, Katy, METRO, the Houston Parks Board and other organizations.
Don Huml is a project manager for the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones (TRIZ). Speaking in regards to TRIZ 1 and 12, he said the initiative helps local organizations collaborate and work more efficiently.
“We’re very excited and very happy and looking forward to implementing these projects that are going to provide additional public safety, flood mitigation, and improved mobility in our city,” he said.
Not all projects are at the same stage. Nine of them will be using their funding for planning, ten will be for construction and/or design, and one will be a maintenance project.
METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock said one of the projects will work to improve bus stops in the Gulfton and Sharpstown neighborhoods.
“We’re taking ownership and responsibility of infrastructure that has been neglected for a very long time,” she said.
Other projects include trail and connectivity improvements for parks like Brenwood Park, Green Trails & Heatherwood Park, Cullen Park, Renwick Trail, Bering Ditch Multimodal Trail and Spring Branch Trail East. All projects will be for regions in Harris County Precinct 4.
Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones said this is the second year of the project initiative.
“Leveraging our resources from Harris County Precinct 4 … with the fourteen partners from this year’s round, we will get more done together,” she said.
