Outlet stores are brick-and-mortar options where manufacturers sell their products directly to the public. Many designer brands have outlet stores, featuring prices typically lower than retail that help folks save money.

Many financial experts — including Dave Ramsey — recommend outlet malls for their bargains and more affordable prices. However, consumers should carefully avoid impulse buying because something’s on sale.

“Buying things you don’t need just because they’re on sale isn’t money-saving. It’s money-wasting,” Ramsey said on his Ramsey Solutions blog.

Here are the dos and don’ts of shopping at outlet malls if saving money is your goal.

Do: Compare Prices

Just because something is sold at an outlet mall doesn’t always mean it’s the best deal. If you have a mobile phone, taking a few moments to look up and compare other prices can save you money.

“Check prices online or in regular retail stores to ensure you’re getting a true discount,” said Nicole Durham, frugal shopper and founder of Beeyond Cereal. “If you have a cell phone, you can easily search for this within moments while still standing in the aisle.”

Do: Plan Ahead

Do your research and plan your purchases before heading to your local outlet mall. Check online for different outlet stores and their offers before shopping.

“Go on the internet and look at the mall’s website for any sales events or special promotions happening,” said Laura Pucker, founder and CEO of Pucker Up Beauty and BBE Media. “Believe me, some of the best offers are right there but only shown online or in email newsletters. Arrange your journey during these periods to save the most money.”

Also, many outlet malls offer rewards programs and newsletters providing extra discounts, special coupons and early sale access. Utilizing these before your shopping trip can help save even more money.

Do: Inspect Quality

While most outlet stores sell products the same quality products as those sold in regular-priced stores, some outlets sell lower-quality items made specifically for them. Therefore, it’s always best to carefully inspect the quality of items you’re looking for.

“Outlet stores often have products made just for them or sell items from previous seasons,” Pucker said. “Check items carefully for any imperfections or variations in material and build quality compared to what you normally see in regular stores.”

Don’t: Impulse Buy

When shopping at an outlet mall, it’s easy to get carried away by the excitement of great bargains. While one impulse buy won’t harm your finances, they can quickly add up until you are wasting more money than you’re saving.

“It’s best to focus on what you need and how much money you plan to spend so that you do not regret spending too much after shopping,” Pucker said.

Durham agrees with this, emphasizing the importance of staying wary of discounted items.

“Not all outlets are the same,” Durham said. “Some give small discounts, others much bigger cuts in price. Be picky and don’t just grab the first ‘deal’ you see.”

Don’t: Buy Something Just Because It’s On Sale

Similarly, many shoppers see a big discount on an item and immediately want to buy it without considering whether it’s worthwhile.

“Avoid impulse buying just because something is discounted,” Durham said. “Make sure it’s something you truly need or want and that it fits within your budget.”

Don’t: Shop During Peak Times

Outlet malls get very crowded, especially on weekends and during holidays. If you shop during peak times, you’ll miss out on deals or specific items you’ve been looking for. Additionally, stores expect more shoppers during these peak times, so offering additional deals or sales is less likely.

“I like to go shopping when it is not so busy, such as in the morning during weekdays,” Pucker said. “This way, there are fewer people and I can shop more calmly without rush or stress around me.”

Shop at Outlet Malls Wisely

Outlet malls are a great shopping destination for grabbing name-brand items at discounted prices. However, being mindful of what you buy and how you shop will ensure you save as much money as possible and get the most out of outlet malls.

“Outlet malls provide great chances to buy high-quality things at reduced prices, but it requires a strategy to make the most out of it,” Pucker said. “By planning early, following your list and using loyalty programs, you can get the best from outlet mall visits. The goal is not only to get the cheapest price, ensuring you have good value and quality in what you buy.”
