AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The 25th year of the Texas sales tax holiday for clothes and school supplies begins this Friday.
The state law exempts tax on qualified items like clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks sold for less than $100 from Aug. 9-11, according to the Texas Comptroller.
For a list of apparel and school supplies you can buy tax free, visit the Texas Comptroller’s website.
“For a quarter of a century, Texans have saved more than $1.8 billion on everything from blue jeans to ballpoint pens in preparation for the back-to-school bell,” said Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar. “As a father of three, I know firsthand how these expenses add up over the years, and this weekend is the perfect time for folks to save some of their hard-earned cash on items they need.”
The sales tax holiday has been an annual event since 1999. The Comptroller’s office estimates that shoppers can save $143.4 million in state and local sales tax.
Qualifying items can be bought in person, online, by telephone or by mail. The items are exempt:
- if the item is delivered and paid for
- if the customer pays for the order and the seller accepts the order for immediate shipment, even if the delivery is made after the exemption period.
